Write File

The Write File action writes text to a text file to create or update it.

Create a Write File action

  1. Click the Files & Folders Actions group and select the Write File action to open the Action Builder.

  2. (Optional) Adjust the Culture setting if you need to convert fields and variables (dates, decimals, etc.) in the action from one culture into another one.

  3. (Optional) Adjust the Run error task settings to fine tune how the action runs.
  4. Type the full path to the File, browse to the file, or click the Magic Wand to use the Expression Builder and access variables, formulas, and tokens you can use to create the file path.

  5. In the Value text box, type the text that you want to write to the file, or click the Magic Wand to use the Expression Builder and access tokens you can use to create the text.

  6. Select an Encoding option: 

    • Default

    • ASCII

    • UTF7

    • UTF8

    • UTF32

    • Unicode

    • Custom. If you select Custom, you must provide the string name of the encoding example (ISO-8859-1).

  7. (Optional) Under Options, select the If file exists check box and then select an action to perform if the file exists:

    • Append

    • Overwrite

    • Insert in front of

  8. (Optional) Add Notes to the action to document any special instructions or functionality.

  9. Toggle the run switch to Run and click OK to execute and save the action.

    Note: The run switch is set to Run by default. To create or modify this action without executing it, click the slider to change the option to Don't Run.  For more information, go to Action Builder.
