Open Workbook

The Open Workbook action opens an existing Microsoft Excel workbook, including workbooks that are password-protected (if the proper password is provided).

Note: The Actions Quick Reference provides a complete list of actions that you can print for easy reference.

Creating an Open Workbook action

  1. Open the workbook using one of the following methods:

    • Drag the Selector onto the Targets list in the target workbook and select Excel.

    • Target the title bar in Microsoft Excel.

    • Click Excel in the Nintex Bot Actions list select Open Workbook.

The Target Preview opens. If this is the first time the workbook was targeted, Nintex RPA LE will attempt to create a workbook connection automatically. For more information about Microsoft Excel workbook connections, see Excel Connections.

  2. Click Rules to change the connection for the action.

  3. Enter or browse to the full Workbook file path for the workbook that you want to open. Optionally, click the Magic Wand to use the Expression Builder.

  4. Enter the Connection (A-Z) letter that will be used to identify the workbook after it is opened. Optionally, click the Magic Wand to use the Expression Builder.

  5. If the workbook requires a password to be opened, select Use password and enter and confirm the password credential. A password-protected workbook will not open unless the correct password is provided.

  6. If you want to update data linked to in the workbook, select Update linked data.

  7. Configure the Timing and Error settings for this action to fine tune the how the action will run.

Note: For more information about the timing and error settings, go to Action Builder.

  8. (Optional) Add Notes to the action to document any special instructions or functionality.

  9. Click OK to save the action.

If the run switch is set to Run, the action will be executed. If the workbook is open when the Open Workbook action is executed, a warning will be displayed that the workbook must be closed for the action to properly execute.

Note: The run switch is set to Run by default. To create or modify this action without executing it, click the slider to change the option to Don't Run.  For more information, go to Action Builder.
