Set a variable value

Use the Set a variable value action A tool for building the processes, logic, and direction within workflows. to create a placeholder for a value to use throughout your workflow, and change that value as and when you need to.

When you add the Set a variable action to your workflow, you can:

  • Select an existing variable to set a value for.
  • Add a new variable and set a value for it.
Before you start 

Configure the Set a variable value action

The steps required to configure the action are given below. The Set a variable value fields and buttons table describes all the required and optional configuration fields.

In the Designer page:

  1. Note: Any actions after this point will use your defined value for the variable.

  2. Select or add a Variable.
  3. In the Value field, do one of the following:
    • If you selected a text or other non-file variable in the Variable field, then enter any combination of text and inserted variables.
    • If you selected a file variable in the Variable field, then fill in the Select a file fields to specify the file you want to use (either a path or a file variable).
  4. (Optional) To set the value of the variable to null, in the Value field, click and select Set value as null.
  5. To add more variables, click Add Variable.

Note: Remember you are selecting the variable to define a value for, rather than inserting a variable.

Text, Decimal, Integer, Boolean, DateTime, File

Value

The value the variable uses throughout the workflow. Variable types accepted in this field depend on the type of variable selected for Variable:

  • When a text or other non-file variable is selected for Variable, any variable type except File is accepted.
  • When a file variable is selected for Variable, the Select a file section is displayed.

To set the value of the variable to null, click and select Set value as null.

This is dependent on the type of Variable selected.

Adds another variable.

You can add up to 20 variables.
