Out of The Box SmartObjects are a set of SmartObjects created during installation and exposed to the user via the K2 Object Browser; these are created by default when K2 blackpearl is installed. Since these SmartObjects are native to K2 blackpearl, they provide out of the box functionality from which the user can benefit immediately without having to create their own SmartObjects.
