IPC Event Wizard - IPC Concepts

What does the IPC Event Wizard Do?

The IPC Event Wizard enables an existing process to be planned while the current or parent process is active. The child process can be called at any point in the duration of the active process and is called as a Default Activity (a process executing within the context of an activity) during the course of the active process. The IPC must be configured to ensure that the operation of the process finishes - this is to avoid orphaned process instances.

The Parent and Child processes must be configured to complete - either synchronously or asynchronously. This enables both processes to either continue or come to an end. If the K2 IPC Event Wizard is not configured correctly either the Parent and or the Child process may not complete or go into error.

Why use the IPC Event Wizard

The IPC (Inter Process Communication) Event Wizard provides you with a user-friendly interface that enables you to establish IPC links between different workflow processes that could be locally or remotely hosted using synchronous or asynchronous execution options.

An organization will have at its disposal many processes that enable the business operations to run. The IPC Event Wizard enables one or more processes to run in the context of an existing process. The advantage of the IPC is that larger processes can be broken down or segmented into relevant and effective portions. In that configuration, a smaller process is called to complete a specific task, query information without affecting the main stream of the business operation. This improves efficiency; or enables completely independent processes to be planned and completed stemming from the main (parent) process.

The Parent and Child processes must be configured to complete. This enables both processes to either continue or come to an end. If the K2 IPC Event Wizard is not configured correctly either the Parent and or the Child process may not complete or go into error.
If the Plan per slot (no destinations) Destination Rule option is selected, an IPC event is used and multiple slots may potentially be created, it is advised to set up a Succeeding Rule to ensure that all slots have completed before the activity continues. In the event where a Succeeding Rule has not been set up for this purpose, only the first slot will be taken into account and the activity will continue as soon as the first slot has completed.
